For every developer story we publish, we will give the person who submits the story an XBOX 360 (hard disk version), with an extra controller, wireless bridge, a 12 month subscription to Xbox live, and a copy of Project Gotham Racing 3.

Xbox 360 bus experience!

March 23rd, 2006 by Patrick S

After class yesterday I ventured down town to check out this XBOX 360 bus that was in town (Its touring all around New Zealand and it picks the day of launch to visit here)
To be honest the turnout was pretty damn dismal due to the rain, but that didn’t bother me (The more free stuff for me. Plus I got to give the new console a try 😀 )
And what a console it was! Most of the games were right up my alley with brilliant GFX, Physics and did I mention the GFX? It was truly amazing. The bus was very cool inside dark with a green glow so we could get the most out of our gaming experience. I must say though the best game would clearly be Delta force 😉
The bus’s sides popped out and either side were about 10 plasma screens. Inside were about 14 Xbox consoles with a range of games.
I managed to take some pictures (although they are rather lame sue to the low light and the poor quality on my camera phone but it gives you a small insight to what it was like.
Very pleased I got to go. I would love to buy a console but unfortunately a lack of funds prevents me…All in good time.
Oh got some  free stuff too:

  • Xbox 360 Trucker Cap
  • Wristband
  • Sweat Band
  • lanyard
  • Whole lot of stickers

 Check out the pictures here:

Microsoft have responded to the new firmware hack.

March 23rd, 2006 by Patrick S

Microsoft/Xbox have replied to the latest xbox 360 firmware hack.

The core security system has not been broken. However, it is reported that the authentication protocol between the optical disc drive and the console may be attacked, which if accurate could allow people to play illegally copied games.  Our security team is aware of this and we are investigating potential solutions to this issue. The Xbox 360 platform was designed to be updated, and we are prepared to respond appropriately should any unauthorized activity be identified.

Everyone should keep in mind that Microsoft invests a great deal of time and effort to ensure that Xbox gamers enjoy the most powerful and exhilarating game experience available today. Genuine and unmodified Microsoft Xbox products provide gamers with the reliability, security, support and dynamic gaming experience that they expect.  Microsoft works with a large group of legitimate business partners to sell and service genuine Microsoft Xbox products. Microsoft does not authorize or support any products or companies that modify or change the Xbox console in any way.

XBOX360 Firmware Hacked!

March 17th, 2006 by Dennis Fraederich [MCP]

A hacker who calls himself “TheSpecialist” stated that he has flashed his XBOX360 with his own custom firmware to run backups of original games!

TheSpecialist claims:

I doubt you’ll see some kind of other hack soon, that lets you boot unsigned code for example. [Microsoft] did a very good job on the [Xbox 360] itself this time. However, they made a big mistake by forgetting about the firmware. They even didn’t remove the debug routines from the FW [firmware], quite amazing. The 360 has a little bit more advanced protection in its FW than the original Xbox, but still, they [forgot] about the debug routines, that were very helpful to us, and most importantly: not signing the firmware.

So watch out for upcoming custom firmwares. 🙂

…oh and we don’t support piracy! 🙂

XBOX 360 NZ Roadtrip

January 20th, 2006 by Patrick S

In March 2006, the next generation of gaming console launches in New Zealand. New Zealand is a major country in MSFT’s books as a lot of Xbox consoles have been sold there in the past. So What does Microsoft do to celebrate the launch of the New console here? How about buying a huge bus. Kit it out with a whole lot of Plasma Screens and Xbox 360’s (and hopefully promo girls 😉 ) And drive around New Zealand showing off what the new console looks/feels and works.

I think its great that Microsoft are splurging out to give Us in New Zealand a taste first hand of the new Xbox 360 as we dont usually get these opportunities.

In March 2006, the next generation of gaming console launches in New Zealand. We’re so excited about Xbox 360 and the amazing line-up of games available at launch, we figured there was only one thing to do – ROADTRIP!
Xbox 360 will be touring the country throughout March in the giant
Xbox 360 Bus and things will be going off with live demos, hot giveaways and even the chance to meet the sizzling Joanna Dark.
And it doesn’t get much better than playing an amazing line-up of Xbox 360 games running on hi-def Samsung screens inside our specially constructed air-conditioned bus. You can beat the queues by registering now and getting your name on the VIP priority list.

I cant wait.

MSN Spaces 10.5 and Xbox 360

November 17th, 2005 by Zack Whittaker

Some good news folks, a Microsoft employee’s blog indicated that at the same time of the release of the brand new games console Xbox 360, a brand new release version of MSN Spaces is going to be available. As Windows Live Mail is certainly on the way out of beta soon, I’m sure that we can expect the next version of MSN Spaces to be rolled out to customers sometime between 22nd November (someone remind me on that day that I’ve missed my mum’s birthday as well) and 2nd December.

Just a heads up, that’s because Microsoft are releasing the Xbox 360 on 22nd November in America, and 2nd December in Europe, but seeing as MSN Spaces is also run by Microsoft, I reckon it’s more likely to be around next week sort of time but I really can’t confirm anything for definate.

Linux stars in MS movie

October 12th, 2005 by Patrick S

I thought I would post this from a NZ news site because it is about New Zealand (which does not get much media coverage) and because it is relitivly interesting

In a stroke of irony, Microsoft’s Halo movie will be produced in Wellington by servers running the open-source Linux operating system.

Universal Pictures and Twentieth Century Fox announced last week that Peter Jackson and his partner Fran Walsh will act as executive producers for the film, based on the best-selling game for Microsoft’s Xbox gaming console.

Bungie, the Microsoft-owned development firm which created the game, confirmed that Peter Jackson’s post-production firm Weta Digital would be involved in the movie.

Weta Digital uses more than 1000 dual-processor IBM blade servers running the Fedora version of the Red Hat distribution of the Linux to produce special effects for movies that have so far included Lord of the Rings and King Kong.

About half the processors are rented out by the New Zealand Supercomputing Centre – a joint venture between Telecom and Weta – when they are not needed for film-making.

The open-source Linux operating system is growing in popularity in the server market, threatening the market share of Microsoft’s Windows Server, though it hasn’t managed to make major inroads on the desktop.

Halo centres on the adventures of an armour-clad super soldier known as the Master Chief who battles an alien horde, and the movie is certain to be laden with special effects rendered using Weta’s servers.

The game has sold 13 million copies worldwide, generating $US600 million in revenue, and was the making of the Xbox games console.

Microsoft will receive $US$5 million up front from Universal Pictures and Twentieth Century Fox, plus a cut of ticket sales.

The script for Halo was written by Alex Garland, who penned the sci-fi hit 28 Days. The movie is expected to be released mid-2007.

The 360 is coming…

September 17th, 2005 by Patrick S

Microsoft has confirmed a launch date for the Xbox 360, announcing the system would hit store shelves on November 22 across North America, December 2 in Europe, and December 10 in Japan.

The company said that this would be the first time a game console would be launched in three territories within a similar time frame.

Details of the launch date were announced on the eve of the Tokyo Game Show 2005, Japan’s yearly gaming expo.

Manufacturing for the system has already begun, and units have begun to be produced in three production facilities in Osaka, Japan; Oxford, England; and Orlando, Florida.

More than 40 game publishers in Japan have already pledged support for the platform, as well as more across the globe. Microsoft says the Xbox 360 will provide a gaming experience unmatched by its competitors.

“This holiday season, gamers in Japan, Europe and North America pining to experience jaw-dropping high-definition graphics, unmatched online play and compelling digital entertainment features of Xbox 360 will finally have the chance,” said Robbie Bach, chief Xbox officer for Microsoft.

Japanese pricing for the new console was also announced. The base system will cost games 37,900 yen, or about $343 USD, compared to the $299 USD price tag within the United States. The Japanese package will include the unit, a wireless controller, a remote control, a headset, and component and Ethernet cables.

I will be deffinantly in the cue to get my hands on one of these!! They look awesome!
