HP Customer Participation Program software causing memory leak

April 16th, 2007 by Jabez Gan [MVP]

A Microsoft MVP reported that a file hppusg.exe is causing a memory leak, which can use as much memory as 800MB or 900MB.

A research on the file hppusg.exe reveals that this file is used by HP for HP Customer Participation Program. It is saved under the directory of C:\Program Files\HP\HP UT\bin

Based on HP website,

“Cause: The hppusg.exe is the HP Customer Participation Program software that the user has opted to install. It does not affect printing or HP Toolbox FX functionality.”

Any other users having this memory leak (from this program)? If yes, post back!

I’ll be restoring back to my default factory state for my HP Tx1000 and enable HP Customer Participation Program, in the next few weeks to see if I’m having the same memory leak.

Thanks to Tony Toews, Microsoft Access MVP for this report.

Update: It seems that a combination of this HP Customer Participation Program and HP Toolbox are causing the problem. A minimum installation of drivers should solve this issue.

HP customer participation program consumes 300MB and I do not know what it is or does. Can I delete the program or?

  2. Jabez Gan [MVP] Says:

    Hey Silverman,

Sorry for the delay in responding.

yes feel free to uninstall HP Customer Participation Program.

HP Customer Participation Program is just like Microsoft Customer Participation Program, where this program will send back statistics of how you use HP products (or Windows) so HP or Microsoft can improve on its products based on that statistics.

But it is an opt in program.

    Hope this helps!

  3. DanH Says:

It may be an opt in program but when you install the program it is for “HP Extended Capabilities” not “Annoying Customer Survey that pops up at least once a week, is badly written and isn’t obvious on the HP site”.

hmmmph. (Trying not to be a “grumpy old man in training”)

  4. Jabez Gan [MVP] Says:

Thanks Dan for your feedback! And no, you do not sound like a grumpy old man *yet* hehehe

  5. A Friend Says:

Sorry to hear you are having problems with your HP printer software. When I last had problems I contacted HP using the mailing address I found in my Printer Manual. The information they gave me helped.

    All for now

  6. Liamo Says:

Hey “friend”, why are you sorry about it? If you’re from HP why don’t you tell us something useful about the subject in hand?

  7. Jabez Gan [MVP] Says:

I believe HP could be good and bad depending on the service country ..

  8. Patrick S Says:

Not a fan of HP/Compaq at all!

  9. Jabez Gan [MVP] Says:

    Why so? 🙂

  10. Patrick S Says:

I once had a Compaq computer (same brand as HP so i dislike them too) and it was nothing but trouble… Never again will I purchase an HP/Compaq product (unless I really have to I guess 😉 )! 😛

  11. Jabez Gan [MVP] Says:

Yeah I hate Compaq but not HP – same company, but different quality. It’s like comparing between Lenovo and Thinkpad lol.

Business class lappies are branded as HP while consumer class is branded as Compaq 🙂

  12. Patrick S Says:

True… I have never purchased an HP. Perhaps ill give it a try-one day.

  13. Jabez Gan [MVP] Says:

Trust me: I’ve used both – now using HP and it’s great 😀 (I’m on Tx1000 model – Tx2000 is coming out soon lol)

  14. michael Says:

I had a terrible problem after installing HP printer software. Every application on my PC is now slow. It took 5 minutes to open the control panel

  15. Jabez Gan [MVP] Says:

    Hey Michael,

Which particular HP Printer is that? Have you tried contacting HP directly on your issue?

  16. snagger Says:

I can’t believe they would install a program that takes 251 MB just for user feedback. Kind of annoying…

  17. Luciana Says:

Hi there, great to find this blog… I had the same problem, memory leak. I uninstalled the Customer participation program and problem solved!
    Many thanks from Argentina!

  18. Jabez Gan [MVP] Says:

    Hi Luciana,

    Glad that it helped. 🙂

I tried to delete the HP Customer Participation Program but my computer refuses to do it? i have only 11% C space left & need to get this out! Any suggestions?

  20. Carey Says:

I just uninstalled the customer participation program software, even though I had to click continue when it gave me a warning that “removing this software may impact the following programs: HP Photosmart all in one driver Software Release 10.0 Rel .2”

We’ll see just how much it effects my printer functions when I get home tonight.

  21. Khalid Says:

I deleted the customer participation software which is around 300mb then I re-installed it from the software disk that came with the printer , when I needed to use photo smart to scan documents the short cut on my desk top does not response !!! any help please.

  22. KenM Says:

I don’t like HP at all. I repair computers for a living. I can tell you from experience that HP’s are no good. Compaq WAS good until HP bought them. Now they are no good. The Customer Participation program is nothing more than SPYWARE tracking your usage and using it to sell you products and services. I’m sure they sell the info also. As for opt in- I have installed MANY HP printers and NEVER have I been offered the option during installation to skip or opt out of this program. MAYBE if you do a custom install and know what to look for, but most of my customers do not know to do that. HP still make great printers, but their computers and software packages leave much to be desired. In short- I don’t like the way they do business. (But fixing all the HP computers does keep me IN business. 😉

  23. Nick Says:

Totally agree with you KenM – same experience here.

  24. George Rog Says:

I cannot uninstall my Photosmart 7250 Printer. (with the CD or in the add and remove program ) Can any one help me?

  25. Shawn Says:

I have tried to uninstall the Hp Customer Participation Program 10.0 using Add/Delete programs. However, every time I click (REMOVE), it blinks and then does NOT remove it. Is there another way to remove it? It is using way too much memory.

    Thank you!
