WLM 8.1 Testers…Where are my tabs?

October 16th, 2006 by Patrick S

I signed into Windows Live Messenger 8.1 tonight and it seams that my beloved tabs have vanished from the face of my Messenger Client! A look at the version number shows the same as it was yesterday-so what’s the deal?
My shiny alerts bell has disappeared, however it has been replaced to the top of my contact list once I receive a new alert. Now i can dismiss alerts as you would reminders on a Pocket PC to remove them from the list. A quick glance at the Tabs menu in the options also is empty so at the moment there doesn’t seem to be a way to bring them back.

Why has Microsoft done this… Alerts are paid advertising for other companies… I want my Tabs back (especially the Shiny Bell) 🙁

My tabs have vanished...Whats happend to them...This is what they have been replaced with.

Update: John from the WLM team has stated that the missing tabs and buttons is a known issue at this time and was not a planned occurance due to server work.  There is no ETA for a resolution to the issue but it is being worked on.(Just like Zack said 🙂 )

Update 2 Tabs are back on tonight 🙂

Yeah i know that…As you can see my tabs are enabled (note the one tab there on the left) when i turn it off it will dissappear. So that dosent fix it 🙁 I guess its goodbye tabs for the moment.

  3. Zack Whittaker Says:

Reconfiguration of the Messenger relay servers – don’t worry about it, give it a few hours/days and it’ll be r’eet 🙂

I’m using 8.1 and my tabs have disappeared too. Weird. A lot of the icons below my Personal Message have gone too – it’s hard to remember what was there before compared with now, but the phone icon has disappeared, among others. I only have the same 4 as you now:

    – Email without the (0) next to it
    – Shared Folders
    – Today (not working – is this just me?)
    – Colour change

All my other icons, as well as the (0) next to the email icon, are still there in Messenger 8.0 running on Vista, so it’s definitely an 8.1 thing.

I wonder what, if anything, Microsoft is planning.

Hey Chris you are right…MY tabs are still gone thismorning and Today is not working. On WLM 8.0 everything is working as normal. MSFT Must have something planned for that new menu they placed on our lists.

As I said – reconfiguration of the Messenger servers. With 8.1 releasing soon (late Nov, early Dec), they need to get new content there. Problem is, in doing so they screwed up for everyone so as I said, give it a couple of days and it’ll be r’eet. Remember, Windows Live Today, Messenger tabs and the contact list are *all* server side – if one screws up, expect the other’s to screw up as well 😛
