R2’s FSRM: Not Receiving any email notification?

In R2, If you are unable to receive any email notification after setting up File Server Resource Manager, it is dued to the fact that you are using Exchange with SMTP. There is a known bug that email will not be sent out if Exchange has Basic authentication turned on.
Workaround: Customers who do use basic authentication can turn it off and FSRM’s email notification?should work. If customers who do not use Exchange, will not have this issue too.
Microsoft is working on a QFE and will release it when it’s done. I’ll post more when it is released.
Update 1: Please leave a comment to this blog and I”ll send you an email notification when the hotfix is out!
Update 2: We have received lots of email notification request. Rest assured that the first thing it is released, I’ll immediately send an email to all of you! 🙂
Update 3: Good News! The hotfix is now available! Please contact PSS and quote the hotfix 914678. The hotfix will not be available for the public at the moment. View the KB at http://support.microsoft.com/kb/914678

Got the hotfix – before I install, can someone tell me if it requires a reboot?
March 10th, 2006 at 11:04 am
No reboot necessary. Howevre you might want to stop any services which are related to MS Exchange.

Is this hotfix for R2 server or Exchangeserver?
March 13th, 2006 at 5:52 am
This hotfix is for R2 server which is connecting to a Exchange Server for email hosting. So you install this patch on the R2 server, not the Exchange Server (if the exchange server isn’t a R2 machine)

Can you let me know when/where the hotfix is available? thanks
March 14th, 2006 at 10:24 am
Peter, I tried emailing you and got a bounce email from your mail server. Anyway, please see Update 3. The hotfix is now available.

Is it possible to get this patch for a demo verision of R2? We are evaluating R2 specifically for the quota management and would like to see the emailing functionality in action. Thanks.
March 23rd, 2006 at 11:12 pm
Hey Nick,
Yes you can install that patch on an evaluation R2. Just ring up PSS using the method I posted above and they will send you the link to download the patch.
Also please see the KB on when will the quota fail (only if you have exchange, it will fail).

I need the patch, but don’t want to pay MS $99 to get it. Can someone just email it to me?
June 19th, 2006 at 8:47 pm
Hi David,
If you are geting hotfix from MSFT, you will not be charged. Just open a support incident, give them your credit card number, get the hotfix and your credit card will be void.

Interesting enough, glad to know there is a fix to this issue. Does anyone know if this fix allows us to enter the username and password creditials to autheticate with the SMTP server? I am currently using mdaemon email server and will be moving to exchange in the fall and it does not like my setup as I need a username and password. I also noticed this problem with printer manager in R2 email notification not working as well. I wonder why Microsoft did not take in account SMTP authorizations.. mmmm?

October 18th, 2006 at 12:14 pm
Hey Farhad,
I think it’s best that you contact MS Support for it. We will not be able to provide you any support if anything goes wrong.

I can’t get the ‘hotfix’ with a trial version of R2.
I need it to validate the move from Server 03 sp1 to server 03 R2.
Can anyone send me the hotfix?
