Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2 – Revert / Reset Stats or Rank

January 18th, 2010 by Patrick S

Ok its nearly 4 am and I figured I would write yet another call of duty post – this time about some ranking issues people have been having over the past few weeks that’s been causing people to complain.

Without going into too much detail – People have identified that Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 does have a console built-in. This console is hidden (prob because its just built on top of CoD 4/WaW tech or for dev purposes) but can be unlocked using an injector tool to trick the game into letting you use it.

So what’s wrong with this? Well  MW2, with IWNet was never deployed to allow people to customize servers using console commands. It was meant to be a fair, basic and straightforward player matching system. By throwing console access into the mix the server host is able to change settings on the fly and thus radically change the game for anyone connected to his server.

If you go on youtube and have a hunt around you will see a raft of videos depicting servers where people have what would usually be unattainable “perks and abilities” (e.g. unlimited ammunition and flight)… Not to mention the ability for the server to switch between field of views and game modes at whim.

So today after learning about this hack for the first time, went exploring to see the mayhem for myself. Upon entering a hacked server everything appears routine but its quickly evident things are not normal – the biggest problem being that kills are worth about 5,000,000 xp a piece – thus ranking you to the highest rank (70) at the drop of a hat.

Now I know that most people are familiar with this by now, and most people feel cheated out of their rank… You are lead into what you would think would be a legitimate server you found through IWNet only to find you are ranked up against your choice….

…So how do we get our old rank back?

Well, this is where Windows (Vista/Se7en) comes in handy – provided you have system restore enabled.
Ill run over it very quickly since it isn’t exactly hard. (Close steam down first)

  1. Navigate to your steam directory (for me: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam)
  2. Open User-data folder and then the folder with in that (numbered string). Within that folder will be a folder named 10190 – Back this up!.
  3. Right click on this folder and select Restore previous version, navigate through the dates to a time/date that’s appropriate (just before you were duped by hacked servers) and select the restore button. (If the restore button is not available you can simply double click on the the correct folder in the list (opens new window). Replace everything in the original 10190 folder with the contents of this restored folder – make sure you replace everything *rather important*
  4. Navigate to the CoD MW2 main folder (for me: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2) and do the same as step 3 but for the players folder
  5. Re-open steam and launch CoD MW2 Multi-player – This should upload your backup to the cloud and overwrite previous stats – Play a round and complete it to make sure everything is sync’ed accross.

Hopefully you can understand my (probably needlessly complicated) instructions – I know I managed to get my previous rank back to normal.
I would advise however, if you do search for games on IWNet, have a look at players before rounds begin – make sure its not full of prestige 10 players or look for irregularities such as 18 people in a 3rd person cage match.
If you have any questions/comments post em’ blow – I’m tired, time for bed 😛

Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 dcburning.ff error fix

January 10th, 2010 by Patrick S

A while ago I wrote a post about an unhanded for Call Of Duty World At War… Now I know this has nothing to do with Microsoft news but I have another fix, this time for Call Of Duty Modern Warfare 2.

The glitch is to do with the retail version only (as far as I know) and happens In Act II after you finish the gulag mission, where you get rescued by helicopter/rope  after rescuing price from the prison.

Just as you clip on a cut scene would usually display, but for some reason the game crashes with the following error.

ERROR: Could not find zone ‘dcburning.ff’

If you check your C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\call of duty modern warfare 2\zone\english (This directory will vary based on your OS/Language) The file exists – so what gives?

Truthfully, I don’t know either but the only fix is to rename or delete dcburning.ff and then validate the game on steam (Right click on Modern Warfare 2 – Hit properties > Click local files tab and select verify integrity of game cache) . The validation will fail and then download the file again -this time allowing your game to run correctly.

Any questions, please ask.

Call of Duty World At War errors (d3dx9_37.dll & Unhandled exception )

November 1st, 2008 by Patrick S

Edit*: The beta for CoD WAW has now cloed – however the following information still does apply to some users of the RTM game.

I know this isn’t really related to Microsoft in any way but the public beta for Call of duty World At War has just come out and I am a huge fan. You can download yourself a free copy of the game if you go to http://www.callofduty.com/ and register to get a serial number and a download link.

If you are running a Vista machine you will most likely run into some difficulties when running the game for the first time after installation. These errors are:

-Message box displaying missing d3dx9_37.dll (or something along those lines)
-Message Box displaying: “Error during initialization: Unhandled exception caught”

To remedy these problems do the following:

Sony… you’re late!

March 23rd, 2007 by Zack Whittaker

Microsoft rained on the parade of the Sony Playstation 3 today, by rolling out a number of publicity stunts. At the Virgin Megastore in Oxford Street in London, Microsoft employee’s (and people I know) from the London office handed out chairs to those queuing that had a website address printed on them.

http://shkyw.org – says it all really! Go Microsoft.

Explaining the Vanishing Point

January 14th, 2007 by Zack Whittaker

A few people have emailed me over the last few days saying “what is this Vanishing Point?” and I thought it was only fair to really explain it – as it’s got many people perplexed.

It’s a game and a huge marketing campaign alliancing AMD and Microsoft together for Windows Vista. The vanishing point is the 30th January 2007 of which “Loki” disappears, the game finishes and Windows Vista is released for the public to buy.

The game lasts 4 weeks and there are 4 boxes to open up – each with 12 puzzles inside. Each week, there is an event in the real world (the first week it was a projection outside the Bellagio Hotel in Las Vegas, the second week it was sky-written messages in Miami) and these events hold a load of clues which help you solve the puzzles in the box for that week.

Once you’ve solved all the puzzles in a box, you’ll get a video from Loki (who is the director of all this, and creates the challenges, supposibly) and gives you an insight into her life or so to speak. Also at the end of each video, flashes up on-screen a part of the website of which leads another puzzle – enter this to the end of the vanishingpointgame.com URL and you’ll have the chance to enter another competition.

I’ve spent a good few days trying to work out these puzzles, and then I find out once I’ve completed the first two boxes there’s an entire Wiki website with all the bloody answers there. So if you need any help, the best place to be is the Wiki site. Enjoy!

The digital decade

January 8th, 2007 by Zack Whittaker

Bill Gates was speaking his keynote speech earlier on, and some things are to be taken from that which are quite interesting.

Microsoft are really keen on getting media anywhere and everywhere it seems, with IPTV (internet protocol television) on any number of devices, and having access to your media from any other device you might have. It’s already clear that by this time next year, partners will be offering live and on-demand

I don’t know where the post has gone… but I told you I was right about Windows Home Server 😉 Partnering with HP, home users will be able to access and store all their data on a central device from any number of Windows powered products, from the Zune to the Xbox 360, PC’s and mobile phones.

Windows Home Server is expected to arrive sometime this year – from what I believe it’ll be more of a home-user-friendly product rather than it being targetted at Windows Server administrators. My guess it’ll probably look at lot like Vista but with a few dashboard options to easily guide a user through storing their content on the server.

notfornoobs.com – Are you freaking kidding me??

August 23rd, 2006 by Zack Whittaker

Here we go, notfornoobs.com has opened up and now you can see the main page, being this: http://www.notfornoobs.com/Microsoft-Habu-Gaming-Mouse.htm

Are you freaking kidding me? All this hype over a bloody mouse? Oh wait, sorry, a mouse that is “jam packed with technologies”, that’s right, like a mouse that lights up?!?

It’s called the Microsoft Habu mouse, with a laser precision thingy and a comfortable shaped grip. But seriously, it’s not just a gaming mouse, designers and computer graphics boffs would love this mouse to do precise computer drawings with and stuff…

… oh what’s the use, it’s a freaking mouse, get a grip.

How many Windows Live services are there?

August 15th, 2006 by Zack Whittaker

Quote – Just How Many Windows Live Services Are There: Microsoft Watch

“Microsoft officials say there are 20 Windows Live services available in beta and/or final versions. But it looks like the real count is in excess of 40. And that’s not including a number of Live services which Microsoft has yet to acknowledge, but sources say are in the pipeline. There are more Windows Live services than meet the eye.”

Oh Mary  So naive… but she’s not wrong, and that’s coming from a semi-Microsoft official. September’s gonna be a nice squishy month for you Live addicts… pay special attention to which categories this entry lies in… there’s a lot of them

Edit: don’t ask me to go into specifics, you know I can’t. Just bide your time, sit quietly and I’ll let you know as soon as things become available – I’m just stirring hype in this entry.

Edit: As of 20th August, there are officially 42 Windows Live services in total.

Microsoft Game Studios Beta Program

May 26th, 2006 by André Nogueira

Interested in beta testing Microsoft games? Here is your chance!

Today I decided to take a look at the “Available Programs” section of Microsoft Connect, and much to my amazent I saw a “Microsoft Game Studios Beta” program.

I clicked “Apply”, and was given a survey to complete. It’s the typical “What’s your computer and what games do you play” survey you’d expect.

It doesn’t guarantee you’ll beta test games, but at least they’ll look at your profile if they need anyone!

Go and get it! It’s for Windows and/or Xbox games 🙂

HUGE Day for MSFT Gaming!

May 9th, 2006 by Patrick S

Today Marked the start of E3- a huge gaming expo…and what a day it turned out to be for Microsoft and their latest console the XBOX 360. Microsoft’s stall’s and overall setup at E3 pretty much kicked Sony and PS3’s butt.

Microsoft kicked of things by announcing to eager gamers that the long awaited Halo 3 will be launching in 2007 (no date as of yet). Along with their speech they have also opened the press pass site with oodles of information regarding Halo 3 along with several Halo 3 Screenshots! (I must say that these shots blow my mind!) Along with the good news that Halo 3 is on its way there was also bad news, it seems that this will be third and final game in the Halo Trilogy which is indeed a but of a bummer as it is one of the best games ever made (not to mention very successful indeed)

There are also rustlings of a Xbox 360 console (which is still a mockup)

From the email we received, half of Microsoft’s original Xbox 360 development team started to work on this console once the 360 hit the market. (source Here).

Well to sum it up it has been an awesome 1st day i wish i was there to get ore info to write about-until next time…
