However after 2 weeks (Jan 19 to Feb 2) from launch Microsoft managed to sell a mere 244 copies of Windows Vista. Software piracy is rampant in the middle kingdom and a pirated version of Vista sells for a mere $1 on the streets. The following numbers are quoted by Windows Vista chief distributor in Bejing.

“…China’s population is 1.3 billion. Vista Ultimate sold 242 copies. That’s a market penetration rate of .0000186% …”

Microsoft rained on the parade of the Sony Playstation 3 today, by rolling out a number of publicity stunts. At the Virgin Megastore in Oxford Street in London, Microsoft employee’s (and people I know) from the London office handed out chairs to those queuing that had a website address printed on them.

Imagine this, he’ll walk up after shaking lots of hands and spouting cr*p to people, then it’ll my turn to shake his hand and say something odd to him. The person I choose to use their line I will pay then £20 (around $39) for their help.

Some lines I have come up with include:

  • Can I call you Willy?
  • Could you possibly lend me a tenner? I heard you’re loaded.
  • Can you lend me my Tube fare home?
  • On hi, nice to meet you too. I’ll have a lager and my friend will have a Coke – he’s driving by the way.

So Mitch Denny (the latter of the two addresses) gets a free laptop with free Windows Vista Ultimate installed on it… even though he’s not as heard of as us. It’s not fair, we didn’t even get *one* to share. OK it’ll be hard for me and Patrick to share as he’s literally half the world away, but has anyone heard of Remote Desktop? I do think so.

My conclusion - it’s not fair. I’ve worked with the Windows Live teams in the UK, Patrick E works for Microsoft, Joseph and Jabez are both MVP’s, Patrick S is just a geek but we love him none the less, Dean’s a geek also but he’s bloody good on the web, and Andre, dear Andre, the ultimate in bug submission for Windows Server 2003 R2.

If you’re from the team that decided to send out laptops to these guys – we respect your decision. However could we have one pretty please, as we’ve given so much to your organisation and we expect very little. We’ll love you lots and lots? :)

We’ve seen it grow from only 7 years ago to beta to the world’s most used search engine. It’s so good that even most of Microsoft use it. It’s so good that they’ve just bought YouTube without exchanging any money whatsoever. Google is reknowned for it’s sense of humour, it’s laid back lifestyle and it’s jokes on April Fools day. But one thing I’ve discovered over checking through some comments is that Google has Easter eggs all over the place.

 Easter Egg - noun [eeh-stehr-ehgg]: In computing, Easter eggs are messages, graphics, sound effects, or an unusual change in program behavior, that occur in a program in response to some undocumented set of commands, mouse clicks, keystrokes or other stimuli intended as a joke or to display program credits. An early use of the term Easter egg was to describe a message hidden in the object code of a program as a joke, intended to be found by persons disassembling or browsing the code.

I’ve been doing some research, and found these following Easter Eggs and/or hidden websites within Google:

 

  • The Answer to Life, The Universe and Everything - gives the answer from Google Calculator
  • French Military Victories – type it in at Google and press “I’m Feeling Lucky” for a hilarious result
  • Failure - type it in at Google and press “I’m Feeling Lucky” – with this one I can’t disagree with at all!
  • Liar - type it in at Google and press “I’m Feeling Lucky” – not as bad as the George Bush one though! :P

So the guys over at the Windows Shell blog have written an article of features that didnt make it into the next build of Vista.
Some of the features that didnt make the cut were Mimesweeper, SafeDelete (Aww i wanted that one :P ) and the start menu action field.

Dissapointing to see some of the things we missed out on but now you see the tough choices the Vista team is up against.

OK so the title may be slightly misleading, but this is strange:

1) Go to Google.com
2) Type in search then hit I’m Feeling Lucky
3) Have a guess at what comes up.

I find this rather strange because Google and Microsoft are like raaawwrrrr at each other because of sibling rivalry (unlike Apple which is most certainly the black sheep in the family, like the uncle we don’t talk about because he likes wearing women’s dresses and lederhosen for example). But then something like this comes about – I dredd to think what the PageRank is for Windows Live Search… if anyone wants to tell me what it is so I don’t have to bare the agony of installing Google Toolbar for my precious Internet Explorer 7, I’d appreciate it.

An Indian discovered that nobody can create a FOLDER anywhere on the computer which can be named as a port on your computer (such as CON, LPT1 etc etc.)
This also works when you try to create a file called “CON”, or “CON.”. “.CON” shows up the way it should. It’s comes back from the DOS days.

Thus the following wont work: CON, AUX, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, PRN or NUL.
Give it a try if you want-I have not tested it on vista but I suspect it won’t work either Confirmed…Works on vista (thanks Jordan)
