[...] I've been seeing a couple of Microsoft Windows Vista Release Candidate 2 (RC2) Build 5743 rumors on the net since yesterday. These mainly had their origin in an article Paul Thurrott wrote as a web exclusive for the Windows IT Pro WinInfo website:Exclusive: Here Comes Windows Vista RC2 (October 02, 2006)Microsoft will ship the final prerelease version of Windows Vista on Friday and, unexpectedly, will name the new version Release Candidate 2 (RC2). (Microsoft had stated earlier that it wouldn't ship an RC2 milestone release of Vista.) But don't let the name fool you. RC2 is really just a standard interim build of Vista, but unlike RC1, it won't be distributed to millions of users. The RC2 build is 5743, and Microsoft is currently testing it internally. As with the previous interim build, 5728, RC2 will go to beta testers, Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) and TechNet subscribers, and a random, limited number of Consumer Preview Program (CPP) members. Now is the time for Paul Thurrot to prove his worth, because a lot of people took his information as being reliable. Of course I'm not some skeptical little 18 year old trying to prove my worth to the world by tearing down key figures from their pedestals and I honestly hope that Paul Thurrot is correct because I consider Windows IT Pro to be a respectable website, but I'm not going to hurt myself (again) jumping to conclusions. What makes Windows Vista news reliable news?I have every reason to believe Paul Thurrott. He has a nice smile an puppy dog eyes, doesn't he? No, it's not and never was my intention to hurt the feelings of Carlos and Minca or to call Paul Thurrot a dog. I love dogs and no animals were harmed writing this post.In my opinion there's only three ways to be sure information on Microsoft Windows Vista builds and designations is correct:It is covered on Microsoft Presspass; Jim Allchin gets quoted on it; (on the Vista Team Blog preferably) Jim Allchin sends a message to the Connect community. Update: Build 5744 not build 5743Nick White wrote on the Microsoft Windows Vista Team Blog that Microsoft Windows Vista Release Candidate 2 (RC2) is now available to the Technical Beta Testers, TAP Testers, and MSDN/TechNet subscribers. Nick quotes Jim Allchin in the letter he sent to the Connect community:People asked for it, and here it is, Windows Vista RC2! We wanted you to be the first to get these bits; next week they’ll be available to a broader set of customers via MSDN and TechNet.All your great feedback has helped us focus on nothing but bug fixes over the past month since RC 1 — each and every day. There are thousands of quality improvements since Windows Vista RC1. You’ll probably notice improvements in performance, application compatibility, as well as fit and finish work. We will continue improving quality until RTM. If you are an ISV, please use this build (certainly at least RC1 or later) to get certified. Visit www.innovateonvista.com for more information on logo certification. You are integral to this creation and refinement process. We are just around the corner from RTM and shipping this great product to the world. This will be the last build made available prior to RTM, so please keep the feedback coming so we can hit the finish line. Thanks for your help in finishing the job!The only thing missing now is a Presspass release, but I guess Microsoft doesn't believe it's interesting news for Journalists or perhaps the presspass team was already heading home...If you want links to download Release Candidate 2 just visit the post on it on the Microsoft Windows Vista Team Blog and follow the links there.
