Pinned:MSBLOG EXCLUSIVE: VISTA BETA 2 WILL BECOME PUBLIC TODAY!
Dennis Fraederich [MCP]
Yesterday, Microsoft made Windows Vista Beta 2 available to the masses for downloading in three different languages. If you can’t download you don’t have to worry, there will be also an option to order it on DVD media later my informant told me. The released build number will be 5384.4, same as the technical beta. Today is a big step forward to let the end-user have a look at Microsoft’s upcoming operating system and of course to let them tryout all new features.
While waiting for a screenshot collection from us don’t hesitate and download it before the big rush will occur!
Download:
UPDATE: The links above are now active.
Microsoft enabled them for public download. Go get it!!
You can request a product key at Microsoft Beta Experience
But now let’s have fun with the first public preview version of Microsoft’s upcoming operating system!

Great news i can’t wait animore!!
June 7th, 2006 at 2:08 pm
Any eta on when is avaible?
June 7th, 2006 at 2:18 pm
Sure……I wonder if Microsoft will delay this *again* like they delayed Longhorn / Vista from the 2002 release.
Oh, and offtopic, but you might want to upgrade to WordPress 2.0.2, few security fixes.
June 7th, 2006 at 2:32 pm
It’s already been delayed over a year, what’s another couple of hours, or weeks?
June 7th, 2006 at 6:21 pm
Awesome! Unfortunately I’m out of blank DVDs.
[Response to William Hook: WP 2.0.3 is already out ;)]

June 7th, 2006 at 7:44 pm
I love my mac too! But my wife has a PC. Maybe I will mess it up some more by installing Vista Beta 2 on it. Then she might get frustrated and buy a mac! Anyway, thanks for your work on Vista. I can’t wait to try it out.

Any word on if the key request site will be posted today?
June 7th, 2006 at 7:58 pm
This is excellent. I have been waiting for quite a long time for Vista to be public available. This is surely going to be a break through in the market.
June 7th, 2006 at 8:08 pm
Downloads are no longer restricted, I just started downloading it from that link, however there is no link on their currently to get a key. They allow you to download it using their akamai download manager or to download it straight from their site.
June 7th, 2006 at 8:37 pm
what antivirus and firewall work on vista ?
June 7th, 2006 at 8:43 pm
Maybe it has not key? Well office 07 beta needs a key but maybe the os beta will be different and not require it. Downloads are slow for it right now, too many dlers.
Anyone know if you can use the technical beta release with the public key? I know they are the same right now and it would save me time and electricity costs.
June 7th, 2006 at 8:52 pm
right now you can get a free one year trail of CA Antivirus at http://www.my-etrust.com/Microsoft/vista/default.aspx it is made to work with vista beta 2
June 7th, 2006 at 8:54 pm
Stupid question, but how do I download the beta without using Microsoft’s download manager software? When I use the link under “To use your own download manager”, only a 14MB ISO file downloads, and I’m not sure how to open it in any download programer.
June 7th, 2006 at 9:02 pm
You need the download manager. It is the only way to get vista unless someone else hosts an ISO file.
June 7th, 2006 at 9:09 pm
[...] As anticipated, Beta 2 of Windows Vista is now public. According to reports at MSBlog, it’s the same build as the one handed out at WinHEC 2006 (5384.4). [...]
June 7th, 2006 at 9:15 pm
Thanks Dennis for the info and I was hoping to tried out Vista. I wanted to see what Microsoft has been working for the past year on the next release and also see if any securer.
June 7th, 2006 at 9:15 pm
Thanks alot, its gonna be great to have a legal copy! Now I just got to wait for the product key.
June 7th, 2006 at 9:25 pm
So I can get the file to download, but every minute or so I get either of the following errors:
“Network error. Cannot download. Check connections, and try again.”?
“The server has prematurely ended the connection. Retrying may resolve the problem.”
What’s up with that?
June 7th, 2006 at 9:35 pm
how about product keys?
June 7th, 2006 at 9:39 pm
To get a Product Key:
-Head to http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/getready/preview.mspx
-Scroll down to Download Now
-Select your Country
-Sign in to Microsoft Live
-Receive up to two keys, each are good for one year and can be used on up to 10 different PC’s.
Enjoy!
June 7th, 2006 at 9:42 pm
It’s true! Every minute I get either of the following errors, too:
“Network error. Cannot download. Check connections, and try again.”?
“The server has prematurely ended the connection. Retrying may resolve the problem.”
No one will download the Vista now… too many connections.
Solutions for this problem now?

It appears that MS is being the typical MS and of course did not expect the obvious to happen. Don’t get me wrong I use MS products every day, along with my various Linux distros @ home. When Korean version Beta2 will Become..!?
June 8th, 2006 at 6:23 am
To Brian, if you look on the right hand side you will see a small area that says “To use your own download manager”. You can download the files from there without Microsofts lame download manager. It comes out to exactly 3200.15mb
To HighTax, now that it is public again its probably under a ton of stress, tons and tons of people are probably downloading it right now. Give it some time and keep trying again.
To anyone? Where can I get me a product key!? This public release is just about as useful as a leaked build iso without a product key. If anyone has any idea where to get one or to sign up for one please do tell.

Grr… a bit frustrated… I can’t seem to get the download to work.. I can access the page, but just can’t download the file either with their download manager, or normally by myself. All it does is download a *.rar with the same name as the file but it’s only 600 kB!!!!!! And IE7 and FF do exactly the same.. maybe to do with my college network…
Thanks anyway for posting this fab info for all of us to get a chance to try out (officially) this exciting product!

I wouldn’t be surprised if they tried to charge for it even. But no, they’re actually offering to let anyone try it out, for nothing. I suppose they need to let people know that despite all the delays that the thing even exists. But they’re also offering the Office 2007 Beta out publicly, so they must be trying something to boost interest or something. [...]
June 9th, 2006 at 12:37 pm
Well both Vista and Office 07 are preety buggy, and Microsoft is known for a lot of security problems. Thats why they want to have a lot of users to test the new software. And if you had to pay for it, well I think the circle of testers would barely expand with the release of Beta 2.

[...] This weekend, Liz was away on Saturday night (:(), and I’ve been meaning to do a Windows XP reinstall (and actually creating a disk image so that future reinstalls are much, MUCH faster), so I figured what the hell, why not spend a nice Saturday night in, backing up all my data? Which is exactly what I did. However, I had downloaded the Vista Public Beta 2 disk image, so I figured what the hell? Why not give it a spin, see what Microsoft has up its sleeve for the next release of Windows? (Despite the fact that it is reaching Duke Nukem Forever delay styles) Well, I popped the install dvd in, and did the install (very pretty, incidentally - no more “DOS Mode” in the installation at ALL), and it took a GOD DAMN LONG TIME. Finally finished, and went to reboot into Vista for the first time… Very exciting… BLACK SCREEN OF DEATH. “Cannot find Winload.exe, or file is corrupted”. Are you KIDDING ME??? I couldn’t be arsed (I love that expression) trying to figure it out, and with no other PCs to use to google the answer, I just went ahead and did my XP install. Now I have a nice and sweet 4 gig disk image sitting on my portable hard drive, so the next time I want to reinstall, I just have to back up my old stuff, and do a quick re-imaging of the hard drive. Lickety split, an hour of (unattended) install later, it’s done! But I found out with a bit of quick googling that that Winload.exe problem seems to be pretty common with this beta. Way to go, Microsoft! You’re not exactly inspiring me with the quality of your OS when the INSTALLER doesn’t even work. Seriously. (I should note that the recommended fix, booting up with the install disk and doing a repair, did not work. Grrrr) [...]

Hi, guys! I was looking around for electronics stuff and i saw computers that said “vista capable”. That got me thinking to whether or not my comp is “vista capable”. Can u guys tell me if my HP m7480n comp with an ATI X850xt platinum edition graphics card will run vista. Thank you for any tips.

[...] Page Summary: I have been waiting for quite a long time for Vista to be public available. This public release is just about as useful as a leaked build iso without a product key.
