Windows Live Mobile Client
Zack Whittaker
Few days ago I spoke about the Live Mobile Client at the Windows Live Session in London. I couldn’t get any photos of it, however I tried my best to run off my memory what I saw, where and how it worked. Please note, it’s a concept so until I can get some screenies, this’ll have to do.
With it, you’ll be able to talk to other Messenger people whether they’re using a mobile device or a PC, you’ll be able to send and recieve nudges, instant messages as well as emoticons. The speeds between the PC and the Live Mobile Client are pretty fast - with about a second or two waiting times. You’ll be able to transfer files from and to your mobile device, including recording a voice clip using your device microphone and send pictures with your device camera.
With the Live Mobile Client (not the final name by the way, we’ll keep you posted on it), you’ll be able to click on a contact with your devices buttons, and check out their contact card and Live Contacts details - so you’ll be able to check out whether they’ve updated their blog and also pick up their contact details from your handset. You’ll be able to subscribe to RSS feeds and view the latest updated feed, as well as being able to access your Space and email via Windows Live Mail (Mobile). It’s really cool from what Phil showed us, and is expected only to run on Windows Mobile 5 devices, and we should be able to see it arriving in beta within the next few weeks

But doesn’t this exist already? At least the Portuguese mobile phone carriers already allow people to use MSN Messenger on their phones (those which support it, that is).

Andre, MSN Messenger DOES exist on Windows Mobile powered phones… However, this is a new version
May 25th, 2006 at 1:26 am
Yes that was what i was going to say. This is Live messenger (not MSN Messenger) plus it may even use Live ID.

[...] The traditional MSN Messenger client on mobile devices is arguably primitive because of the lack of integration, features and a nice looking GUI. Now, that is all going to change when Windows Live Mobile Client (unconfirmed name) is released in the next few weeks as a Beta. With it, accessing information will be easier then ever with the addition of great new features that were previously not available for mobile devices. For example, not only will you be able to chat live with your buddies on your MSN list, you will also be able to send emotions and transfer files. Furthermore, you will also be able to send voice clips and send pictures from your integrated camera. Since details are still a bit sketchy, other features may also be supported, such as video conferencing as devices now support faster wireless connections such as 3G. In addition, with Windows Live Mobile Client, the whole community feel is more visible. You will be able to check your friends blogs and get contact information from their unique contact cards. In addition, you can also check e-mail and even subscribe to RSS feeds. It is expected the client will be available in the next few weeks, though unfortunately it seems it will only work on Windows Mobile 5 devices. Finally, a nice all in one client with a very stylish and institutive GUI to keep organized and connected with everyone, are you excited about this? Does anyone know if the new version will finally allow to do voice conversations with other MSN users (pc or mobile). Until it does they are pretty useless. I’ve been unsing Microsoft portrait which works pretty well but would like to see it in a new messenger version.

Messaging is only one facet of windows live - so are MS addressing the javascript and DOM of Pocket IE so that we can get gadgets running mobile?
June 4th, 2006 at 2:29 pm
Any chance we will be able to access the windows live mail calendar from a WM5 device? I have just aquired a Moto Q and it is impossible to get my MSN calendar on that device. The live messenger above looks great it would be an nice addition.

[...] I deleted over 300 contacts from my GMail contact list. I think that GMail is being a bit aggressive about its retrieval and keeping of email addresses. I had to delete a bunch of EAC email addresses that I have not used for… heh almost two years. That felt very good. I’m trying to get my life in order or… back in order. The HTC Faraday TMobile SDA is now mine. I purchased it last week. About half of my office uses a handheld of some sort. This will help me (hopefully) slack off easier stay organized. I also aquired Windows Live Beta for my device. It is doing a fairly decent job of fetching my podcasts. More on this later… as… its not publically available yet. TMobile the service provider is not going a good job though at making me like their service. They would like to charge me an additional 30USD a month for EDGE/Hotspots when all i want is EDGE. I could care less about the Hotspot; I am rarely in a Starbucks. In lieu of that, I added GPRS to my account. Slightly slower, but much cheaper (6USD). [...]

September 15th, 2006 at 10:54 pm
I`ve already installed Windows Live on my ppc, but it`s not longer activated.
Awaiting a new build at the moment.
September 23rd, 2006 at 6:19 am
I think all this is fake. As fake as those people who say the program is great and they test some beta version… but can’t provide any link nor real screenshots.
September 23rd, 2006 at 9:33 am
It’s on Connect - it’ll be out and about in the coming months. The image in the article was a *concept* of what I could remember it looking like when I saw it - difficult to get an actual image when your phone camera is a VGA 640×480 camera…
September 24th, 2006 at 12:32 pm
Where do we check they have released it?
October 17th, 2006 at 10:08 pm
My Connect does not have the option to sigi up for this…………
Why?
October 18th, 2006 at 4:46 am
I think its closed beta at the moment… or it has not started yet… Not much news has been posted regarding this new software… Rest asured…we will keep you posted!
October 27th, 2006 at 12:07 pm
any update anyone? is it available yet?
November 2nd, 2006 at 7:49 pm
It IS in closed beta and you cannot see it on your Connect Account because you were not invited. But there have been a lot of delays the new build is now nearly a month late. So it doesn’t really matter if you have the old build or not cause it’s not working right now.
November 7th, 2006 at 5:44 am
a new version of the Beta is out

Can anyone tell me if this new client will allow send ink’d messages. I mean, if the Windows (PC) client permits sending ink messages, shouldn’t it be wiser (and more comfortable) to allow PPCs do it aswell?
November 22nd, 2006 at 5:58 pm
No, “ink’d” messages have not yet been implemented. It looks like they are trying to make it pretty much the same as the PC version so I guess we’ll see when they make the software public.

PLEEEZE! Ever hear of screen capture apps? If any of you really have the beta running on your phone and don’t know how to get a screen capture… you are full of shit.
January 7th, 2007 at 3:12 am
Listen you idiot this is a mockup picture!! Zack is merly showing how the application will look on the pocket Pc itself. How can he screen capture if its a MOCK UP?!?
